Design & Technology

Intent

Our aim is for all our children to be respectful, lifelong learners, who can make a meaningful contribution to their community by the time they leave us in Year 6, ready for their next steps in their life journey.  We want our children to go on to live a life of choice and opportunity.

Every child will experience development and growth through exploration, creativity and discovery. Each individual learner is encouraged and supported to live our core values so they can develop determination, collaboration, honesty and their self-belief.

At Staynor Hall, children receive a Design and Technology curriculum which allows them to be creative through a variety of practical activities. Using a range of design methods,  we design purposeful, functional and innovative products using design criteria. Our design and technology curriculum provides children with real life contexts for learning and makes links to how technology shapes the world around us, opening up their understanding of further opportunities in the wider world.

As well as encouraging children to become independent, creative problem solvers, we strive for our children to become confident and critical thinkers. The children learn to research, investigate, design, make, test and evaluate. Evaluation is an integral part of our curriculum as it allows children to reflect, consider other’s views, adapt and improve their product, which they can apply across other areas of the curriculum and throughout their lives.

Implementation

Design and Technology is taught in accordance with our long term plan. In the Early Years, children have design and technology carefully planned into their provision areas, encouraging exploration of the world around them.

Across KS1 and KS2, Design and Technology is covered with cross curricular links, allowing children to build on their current knowledge and learn in different contexts. Our knowledge based curriculum has been carefully mapped out across the school to ensure clear progression across all year groups and focuses on the knowledge stated in the national curriculum.

Impact

At Staynor Hall, our children have a positive attitude towards their learning and a passion for Design and Technology. Our purposeful learning equips our children with a vast understanding of the world around them. We believe that our explorative and creative design and technology curriculum allows our children to be independent, resilient learners. By combining practical, creative and reflective skills, we enable them to become critical and informed consumers and innovators. Our learning is documented in creative curriculum books, online platforms and proudly displayed around our school.
